Jake - ADOPTED

Jake is a big love bug! He is very independent, and comfortable in his surroundings. He is totally house broken, and pretty lazy, but he does love his 4 walks a day. Jake's best buddy is Max; a young black version of himself. Both dogs get along very well and from day 1 Jake has been very calm around Max. When we go to the dog park Jake lays down and takes it all in. Others dogs do not bother him. He loves hunting squirrels and gets a pep in his step whenever one passes by! Jake is BIG boy but takes up little room. His back right leg is getting older then he is, it drags a little when Jake is out walking around, but believe me it does not affect his spirit. The first day Jake was in our house he let me bath him and brush his teeth. He loves kids and goes up gently to them; I think he loves kids petting techniques! Jake is very sweet and would make a great family pet and companion. He is 11 years old. He does not know his name very well, but comes over with a whistle. I think anyone who adopts him will be blessed!

To be considered you should read our adoption page and fill out the application form there. You can comment that you are interested on this forum. Just use the same name you use on the application so we know who you are.

Paul & Nadine I have passed your name on to our placement coordinator. Have you heard anything on Jake yet? He is still available for adoption.

Hi Sue,
My husband did receive a call today and we have a home check scheduled for this Sunday. There was no mention of Jake though.
Thank you,
Natalie R.

Natalie, So glad you have your home visit scheduled! The HV volunteer will go over everything with you and MLRR and will let you know if Jake is still available. As far as I know he has not been adopted. Thank you so much for considering Jake. Senior dogs are so loveable and appreciative of their new life. My fingers are crossed!

Hello,

We had our home inspection/interview yesterday and all went well. My wife and I are definitely still interested in Jake. We just had a question regarding the severity of his ailing leg. The brief write up mentions that it is "a little older" than the rest of him. Just that is drags a little but he can still move if he sees a squirrel. This leads me to believe that he would be ok with stairs right now..maybe not the best but that he could still manage for now. Is that the case? We got the impression during our inspection that his leg may be worse than indicated. We really want to provide Jake a great home but are concerned about the issue with the stairs. Thanks for the help.

I just read about Jake for the first time. He sounds like a wonderful boy. I thought I might be able to add some insight regarding the situation with his leg for those that are interested. About a year and a half ago we adopted Jameson, an 11 year old male chocolate lab. When he came to us, he also would drag his hind legs from time to time (in Jameson's case it was both legs). Our vet said it was a degenerative spinal cord disorder, where the lining around the spinal cord is wearing away. This causes the signal from his brain, to make his back legs work, not always get to his legs, therefore the drag or "knuckling" as they call it. He very clearly told us that this was a condition that will never improve, but you can slow the progression by giving him vitamin A and E, which we have done every day since with his dinner. While it has gotten worse, it is progressing very very slowly. Jameson still loves going for his walks twice a day. He goes up and down the stairs, but he really has to focus when he's doing it. It's kind of funny to watch because he puts his head down and just goes one step at a time. One day early on, when he was coming up the basement steps, I saw him and called his name. He got startled and looked up at me, which resulted in him falling down the stairs. I was very scared, but he got right back up and kept going. Chocolate labs are soo stubborn! One other minor side effect of this is that it must also affect his pooping. He can only poop while he's walking, which makes for some interesting walks with him, but you get used to it and adapt. Every once in a while, one will slip out in the house. We just pick it up quick and make sure not to reprimand him for it, because it's obviously not his fault. Our last three labs have all been over 10 years old, and we wouldn't have traded any of them for anything! They are so smart and such great companions! I hope you find Jake to be as great of an addition to your family, as we have found Jameson to be of ours. Let me know if I can provide any additional insight. - Karl
